Metawersum będzie stanowiło uniwersum aplikacji oraz usług połączonych w jeden ekosystem, doświadczanych za pośrednictwem okularów, soczewek czy innych noszonych projektorów (jeśli ktoś ma kilka godzin, to polecam serię artykułów na temat metawersum autorstwa Matthew Balla, jednego z najlepszych specjalistów i analityków na świecie od tego zjawiska). To będzie środowisko, w którym będziemy pracować, bawić się i spędzać czas. Będzie obsługiwane przez aplikacje i mechanizmy oparte na blockchain, połączone chmurowo, wykorzystując AI i wszelkie formy VR.

W dużym skrócie – to będzie połączenie VR-u (znanego obecnie) z grami MMO (massively multiplayer online game), rozrywką rodem z Netflixa oraz ekosystemem wirtualnych walut i przedmiotów (NFT czy kryptowaluty). W metawersum będziemy spotykali się ze znajomymi, grali, pracowali oraz dokonywali płatności i spędzali dużo czasu. To nie będzie kolejne „Second Life” tylko w pełni żyjący świat, nie zaś jego iluzja.

Czy to jest chwilowa moda? Nie wydaje się. Microsoft zapowiedział, że chce zbudować enterprise metaverse. Chińskie firmy również nie zostają w tyle i deklarują budowę swojej wersji metawersum. Do podboju tego nowego uniwersum przygotowują się oczywiście firmy gamingowe, jak Epic Games (za pomocą swojego flagowego dzieła, czyli Fortnite’a), Roblox czy Minecraft. Mówimy zatem o miliardach już istniejących użytkowników oraz setkach miliardów dolarów czekających na inwestycje.

I teraz najważniejszy chyba news ostatnich miesięcy. Pracami nad metawersum pochwalił się Facebook. W wywiadzie dla „The Verge”, Mark Zuckerberg opisał swoją wizję oraz wskazał, nad czym jego firma już pracuje. Niedługo potem oświadczył, że spółka zmieni nazwę, aby lepiej oddać kierunek zmian i motywację wszystkich pracowników w osiągnięciu wyznaczonego celu. Zuckerberg dał się poznać wiele razy jako wizjoner – kupując Oculusa, Whatsappa i Instagrama lub inwestując i rozwijając własną kryptowalutę. To jest bez dwóch zdań człowiek, który potrafi przewidzieć przyszłość (a nawet ją wymyślić) i odpowiednio się przygotować do zmian, jakie z nią nadejdą.

W 2016 roku prezes Facebooka podczas dorocznej konferencji F8 pokazał słynny „plan dziesięcioletni”. To była niesamowicie odważna wizja udowadniająca, że Facebook nie dość, że chce być liderem mediów społecznościowych, to również chce się uniezależnić od producentów telefonów (jak Apple i Samsung), treści rozrywkowych (Netflix), wyszukiwarek (Google), gier (STEAM) czy sprzętu elektronicznego.

Ci, co mówią, że VR to dla Facebooka tylko gadżet i mało ważna technologia albo przespali ostatnią dekadę, albo nie rozumieją tego, co się dzieje wokół nich. Porównywanie tego, czym będzie metawersum do Second Life, świadczy o braku zrozumienia trendów współczesnej technologii. Facebook zadeklarował 10 mld dol. na wsparcie rozwoju metawersu – dość spora suma, jak na chwilową zachciankę…

Z drugiej strony obranie kierunku metawersu, zmiana nazwy na Meta nie może być analizowana w oderwaniu od licznych procesów w USA i Europie związanych z łamaniem prawa przez Facebooka, rewelacji sygnalistki Frances Haugen, czy kolejnych skandali (w tym najnowszego, czyli oskarżenia o zmowę cenową między Google’em a Facebookiem). To jest po prostu gwałtowna próba odwrócenia uwagi opinii publicznej i instytucji kontrolujących. 

Rebranding, czyli ucieczka do przodu

Mark Zuckerberg podąża drogą innych koncernów, które dzięki takiemu zabiegowi próbowały „oderwać” od siebie nagromadzone złe emocje i prawne wyroki. Przykładowo British Petroleum zmieniło się w BP Amoco w latach dziewięćdziesiątych, a później w BP w 2001 roku. Philip Morris, czyli spółka produkująca papierosy po serii wyroków i rekordowych kar zmienił się w Altrię. Z drugiej strony marka Facebooka jest znana co najmniej połowie ludzkości. Jej zmiana to strata ogromnej rozpoznawalności. Jak podsumowuje Prashant Malaviya, profesor marketingu na Uniwersytecie Georgetown: Kiedy firmy zmieniają nazwy, to często znak, że kończą im się możliwości rozwoju. To strategia ostatniej deski ratunku, gdyż marka to jedna z największych składowych firmowego majątku.

Wracając do głównego tematu: deklaracja zatrudnienia 10 tysięcy osób z terenu Unii Europejskiej do pracy przy facebookowym metawersum należy rozumieć dwojako – po pierwsze, jako hołd dla Brukseli („nie karzcie już nas, bo damy pracę dużej grupie pracowników w Europie”) oraz pokazanie kierunku, którym spółka ma zmierzać w ciągu najbliższych lat. Niemniej, czy metawersum będzie spiżowym pomnikiem Marka Zuckerberga, czy też raczej jego wirtualnym katafalkiem, zależy tak naprawdę od niego samego.
