Wtedy też jako alternatywę dla biznesu sprzętowego John Chen, CEO Blackberry, wskazał rozwiązania zabezpieczające smartfony z Androidem. Stwierdził, że producent może je oferować nawet wtedy, gdy nie będzie sprzedawać urządzeń. Tak też się stało. Telefony ze znanym logo będą jednak nadal pojawiać się na rynku, ale produkowane przez partnerów Blackberry. Należy do nich TCL, właściciel marki Alcatel. Kanadyjski vendor zawarł także umowę z indonezyjskim producentem smartfonów. Powstało w ten sposób joint venture PT BB Merah Putih, które będzie dostarczać na rynek smartfony z logo i oprogramowaniem Blackberry. Kanadyjska firma ma natomiast skoncentrować się wyłącznie na rozwoju oprogramowania, zwłaszcza zabezpieczeń i aplikacji mobilnych. John Chen liczy, że dzięki temu biznes wreszcie wyjdzie na plus. W ostatnim kwartale Blackberry miał 372 mln dol. straty.
