]]> Według informacji serwisu Zdnet Spartan będzie wyglądać i funkcjonować podobnie jak Chrome i Firefox, wykorzystując silniki Chakra i Trident. Microsoft pracuje ponoć nad dwiema wersjami silnika Trident, co wskazywałoby na to, że szykuje dwie różne przeglądarki. Obie zostałyby włączone do Windows 10 (przynajmniej w wersji na PC), tj. Spartan oraz Internet Explorer 11. Dostępna obecnie przeglądarka IE pozostanie, aby zapewnić użytkownikom wsteczną kompatybilność. Spartan (który, jak zastrzegają źródła, nie jest kolejnym wydaniem Explorera, lecz zupełnie nowym produktem) będzie dostępny także w urządzeniach mobilnych (telefony i tablety z Windows 10). 

Nowy projekt Microsoftu ma wejść w życie w ramach zmian związanych z wprowadzeniem Windows 10. Celem jest również odzyskanie pozycji na rynku przeglądarek – obecnie Explorer pod względem popularności zdecydowanie przegrywa z Chrome’m, który ma blisko połowę światowego rynku (Explorer – ok. 20 proc.).
