]]> Paul Allen razem z Billem Gatesem założył Microsoft w Albuquerque w stanie Nowy Meksyk w 1975 r. Był pomysłodawcą nazwy firmy (Micro-Soft, czyli skrót od "microcomputer" i "software"). Został wiceprezesem wykonawczym, odpowiadał również za badania i rozwój nowych produktów. Ma znaczący wkład w powstanie wczesnych wersji oprogramowania, jak MS-DOS i Word, które umożliwiły rozwój komputerów osobistych i wyniosły Microsoft na szczyt. Ze względu na stan zdrowia i próby podważenia jego pozycji w firmie, zrezygnował z pracy w Microsofcie w 1982 r. Pozostał jednak członkiem rady dyrektorów i głównym udziałowcem koncernu do 2009 r.

Założył przedsiębiorstwo inwestycyjne Vulcan Ventures. Wspierał m.in. projekty sztucznej inteligencji, medyczne, muzyczne, kupił udziały w sieci radiowej. Inna jego firma zajmowała się szkoleniami z wykorzystaniem technik komputerowych. Inwestował także w technologie kosmiczne. Zajmował się działalnością charytatywną. Należał do najbogatszych ludzi świata. Jego majątek Forbes oszacował na 20,3 mld dol.

]]> Jeden z założycieli Microsoftu zarzuca największym firmom technologicznym, że bezprawnie wykorzystały patenty Interval Licensing (część Interval Research), funkcjonujące obecnie w wyszukiwarkach i serwisach e-commerce, ułatwiające użytkownikom odnajdywanie interesujących treści. Winnymi naruszenia prawa są według Interval Licensing takie koncerny jak Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo!, YouTube, AOL, eBay, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples i NetFlix. Allen domaga się odszkodowań, które mogą sięgnąć nawet 500 mln dol. Podobny pozew składał już w sierpniu, jednak został on oddalony na wniosek Google’a i AOL. Tym razem pozew ma być lepiej udokumentowany, znalazły się w nim m.in. informacje dotyczące współpracy Interval w badaniach poprzedzających powstanie Google’a. Jak dotąd pozwane firmy nie ustosunkowały się do zarzutów.
