Instytut wydaje certyfikaty specjalizacji związanych z Linuksem (Linux Professional Institute Certification). Program certyfikacyjny jest rozpowszechniany poprzez sieć partnerów. LPI oferuje trzy programy partnerskie: dla firm szkoleniowych, organizacji niekomercyjnych typu akademickiego oraz dla detalistów i dostawców oprogramowania.

Jak zapewnia instytut, już w ub. roku liczba egzaminów LPI w Polsce znacznie wzrosła. Można je zdawać w postaci testów komputerowych w centrach egzaminacyjnych Pearson VUE i Thomson Prometric albo w wersji papierowej na konferencjach linuksowych, targach IT oraz u partnerów akademickich. Pierwszy tego typu egzamin LPI zorganizowało w kwietniu br. w Warszawie, kolejny jest zaplanowany na 11 czerwca we Wrocławiu w trakcie Sesji Linuksowej na Politechnice Wrocławskiej.

Pierwszy jest skierowany do komercyjnych firm szkoleniowych (LPI Approved Training Partner Program), drugi, LPI Approved Academic Partners Program, jest przeznaczony dla organizacji niekomercyjnych typu akademickiego. Trzeci program, LPI Certified Solution Provider, jest skierowany do detalistów i dostawców oprogramowania.

Egzamin LPI może być przeprowadzany w różny sposób. Standardową metodą są testy komputerowe w centrach egzaminacyjnych Pearson VUE i Thomson Prometric. LPI oferuje także możliwość egzaminu w wersji papierowej na konferencjach linuksowych i targach IT oraz u partnerów akademickich. W 2010 r. LPI podpisało umowę partnerską z Novellem. Posiadacze certyfikatu LPIC mogą wystąpić o przyznanie  certyfikatu Novell Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) bez dodatkowych egzaminów i kosztów.
