]]> Wniosek dotyczył kodowania ANS, które zostało opracowane przez polskiego naukowca, wykładowcę Uniwersytetu Jagielońskiego, dr. Jarosława Dudę. To rozpowszechniona metoda kompresji danych w urządzeniach elektronicznych. Jest stosowana na otwartych zasadach, np. w programach Apple’a, Facebooka, jak również Google’a. Kodowanie ANS wykładowca Wydziału Matematyki i Informatyki UJ opracował w latach 2006-2013, a następnie opisał w artykułach. Naukowiec od  2014 r. korespondował z Google’em mailowo i na publicznym forum, pomagając mu we wdrożeniu ANS do kompresji plików wideo. Sam  kodowania nie opatentował, wychodząc z założenia, że koncepcja powinna być dostępna dla wszystkich.
Starania amerykańskiego giganta są krytykowane przez organizacje branżowe,  m.in.  Electronic Frontier Foundation i Free Software Foundation. Trzeba podkreślić, że amerykański urząd patentowy odrzucił wniosek Google’a wstępnie. Firma może się odwoływać od tej decyzji.
