]]> Decyzję ogłoszono podczas konferencji Horizon w San Francisco. Jak tłumaczyła Diane Greene, szefowa chmurowego biznesu Google’a (wcześniej CEO VMware’a): „Klienci ciągle pytali: czy Google serio myśli o sektorze enterprise? Wyjątkowo nas to drażniło, bo od dawna bardzo poważnie podchodzimy do działania w segmencie dużych firm”.    

Nowa marka – Google Cloud – było poprzedzona kilkoma innymi nazwami. Kiedy rok temu Diane Greene objęła kierownictwo nad działem chmurowym koncernu, jego oficjalna nazwa brzmiała Google For Work, ale w komunikacji wewnętrznej (czasem też na zewnątrz) używano określenia Google Enterprise.   

Dział Google Cloud zajmuje się rozwojem usług chmurowych – Compute Engine, App Engine, Apps – jak też takimi rozwiązaniami i obszarami, jak Chrome, Android, mapy, wyszukiwanie, zaawansowana analiza danych oraz machine learning.  

Podczas konferencji Horizon Google poinformowano również, że pakiet Apps for Work będzie teraz oferowany pod nazwą G Suite. Zmianie towarzyszy wprowadzenie nowych funkcjonalności, co ma zwiększyć konkurencyjność rozwiązania wobec Office’a 365.
