Badano wpływ oprogramowania antywirusowego na prędkość działania systemu operacyjnego i uruchamiania poszczególnych procesów (kopiowanie, szyfrowanie i archiwizację plików, instalację i usuwanie aplikacji, uruchamianie programu i pobieranie plików z sieci). Wyniki porównano z tymi, jakie uzyskuje komputer, na którym zainstalowano wyłącznie system operacyjny. Narzędziem testującym był PC Mark 7 Professional Testing Suite.

Według AV-Comparatives dwie najszybsze aplikacje antywirusowe to obecnie Eset NOD32 Antivirus 5 oraz K7 Antivirus Plus 11.1 (uzyskały po 189,8 punktów). Trzecie miejsce zajęły ex-aequo produkty Avasta i Symantec’a (189,7). Numer 5 to F-Secure (189,6), a 6. – Avira (189,1). Test przeprowadzono na komputerach z procesorem Intel Core i5 (2,67 GHz), 4 GB RAM-u, kartą graficzną Radeon HD 4500 (512 MB), dyskami twardymi z interfejsem SATAII i 64-bitowym systemem operacyjnym Windows 7 Professional SP1. Przy badaniu czasu reakcji uwzględniono procesy optymalizacyjne i tzw. fingerprinting (pomijanie przy kolejnym skanowaniu sprawdzonych wcześniej plików).
