Drugim bardzo istotnym kanałem jest szeroko rozumiany inbound, czyli szereg aktywności podejmowanych przez fundusze, dzięki którym trafiają one do świadomości startupów. Paleta jest w tym przypadku bardzo bogata. Może być to publikowanie treści w różnej formie – od blogów, przez komentarze i artykuły w mediach tradycyjnych, raporty, infografiki czy badania, wystąpienia na różnego rodzaju eventach w roli speakera lub jurora w konkursach, czy też angażowanie się w pracę mentorską w programach akceleracyjnych.

Kolejne źródło to współpraca z funduszami, inkubatorami, stowarzyszeniami, by uczestniczyć w demo days i przyglądać się rozwijającym się startupom już na wczesnym etapie. W większości przypadków jest to praca, która ma na celu edukowanie rynku, budowanie dobrych praktyk i wspieranie founderów. Istotna w tym zakresie jest dobra strategia komunikacyjna, ponieważ poza ekspozycją marki funduszu i dystrybuowaniem proedukacyjnych treści, pozwala to zbudować wyobrażenie w zakresie tego, jak dany fundusz działa i czym wyróżnia się spośród pozostałych. W efekcie spółki zgłaszają się do funduszy same, pisząc mejle, wypełniając formularze czy trafiając różnymi metodami bezpośrednio do partnerów.

Własny scouting

Ostatnim z trzech kluczowych filarów jest własny scouting. Niesie on ze sobą dodatkową wartość dla funduszu, ponieważ pozwala trzymać rękę na pulsie w zakresie trendów technologicznych na rynku, transakcji, które się odbywają z udziałem innych VC czy standardów inwestycyjnych. W praktyce sprowadza się to do tego, że analitycy, mając określone wytyczne w zakresie kryteriów inwestycyjnych funduszu, weryfikują tysiące spółek, które mogą potencjalnie być przedmiotem inwestycji. Punktem wyjścia są tutaj różnego rodzaju bazy agregujące startupy, typu Dealroom, Crunchbase czy PitchBook oraz szereg mniejszych źródeł.

Wartościowe jest również systematyczne analizowanie mediów społecznościowych oraz tradycyjnych pod kątem określonych słów kluczy związanych z ekosystemem startupowym. Minusem scoutingu w porównaniu do inboundu jest to, że nie wiemy, czy dany startup poszukuje obecnie inwestora, więc działanie to ma charakter znacznie bardziej długofalowy. Czasem potencjalna spółka wraca po kilku miesiącach, a w innych przypadkach okazuje się, że zamyka już daną rundę, więc pomimo niezwykle dużej liczby analizowanych spółek, konwersja z proaktywnego scoutingu na inwestycje jest statystycznie najmniejsza.

Garść statystyk

Jak wyglądało powyższe z perspektywy mojego funduszu Czysta3.vc? W 2020 roku przeanalizowaliśmy około 1,5 tysiąca startupów. Do głębszej analizy wybraliśmy 323 spółki, z czego ostatecznie zdecydowaliśmy się zainwestować w dziesięć. W efekcie daje to 3,09 procenta konwersji spółek z głębszej analizy oraz zaledwie 0,66 procenta z generalnej próby.

Każdy ze skutecznych funduszy prowadzi własne tego typu statystyki, odnotowując źródło pochodzenia, zakres czy powód odrzucenia danej inwestycji. Często jest też tzw. hall of shame, czyli wykaz spółek, w które dany fundusz mógł zainwestować, nie zdecydował się tego zrobić, a spółka osiągnęła spektakularny sukces. Daje to do myślenia w zakresie tego, jak można poprawić proces związany z deal flow i jak nie powielać kolejnych błędów.
