„Lift and shift”, czyli przeniesienie części lub całości środowiska IT do chmury prywatnej lub publicznej, to podejście, które może być atrakcyjne dla konserwatywnych klientów. Ich cechą charakterystyczną jest to, że nie akceptują rewolucyjnych zmian oraz nie chcą utracić poczucia kontroli nad własnymi zasobami i danymi. Osiągane korzyści ograniczają się wówczas zwykle do optymalizacji kosztów utrzymania – dotyczący tradycyjnej infrastruktury IT CapEx i OpEx zamieniany jest na OpEx platformy chmurowej. Czasami wraz z migracją „lift and shift” przeprowadzana jest częściowa optymalizacja platformy. Można przykładowo zredukować liczbę serwerów lub zarchiwizować części danych, aby w pełni wykorzystać wydajność oraz możliwości współczesnych platform IaaS.
