WD kupi SanDiska za 19 mld dol.
Producenci porozumieli się w sprawie przejęcia. WD znacznie wmocni się na rynku pamięci NAND i dysków SSD.
Połączone firmy nadal będą kierowane przez obecnego szefa WD, Steve’a Miligana. CEO SanDiska, Sanjay Mehrotra, wejdzie do zarządu nowego przedsiębiorstwa. Joint-venture SanDiska i Toshiby, obejmujące wspólny rozwój i wytwarzanie pamięci flash, ma kontynuować działalność. WD przewiduje, że zakup będzie kosztował ok. 19 mld dol.
SanDisk należy do największych producentów pamięci flash, wytwarza m.in. dyski SSD i karty pamięci. Dzięki przejęciu WD chce stać się liderem nie tylko na rynku dysków talerzowych, lecz także SSD, znacznie poszerzając ofertę dla firm i konsumentów.
WD w ostatnich latach sporo inwestuje w technologie flash. W 2013 r. przejęło sTec, firmę specjalizującą się w nośnikach klasy SSD dla przedsiębiorstw. W segment biznesowy wszedł w ub.r. SanDisk, kupując Fusion-io, dostawcę serwerowych pamięci flash. Także główny konkurent WD na rynku nośników pamięci – Seagate – dąży do rozwoju biznesu opartego na pamięciach NAND.
