Dział systemów DLT i pamięci masowej firmy Quantum Corporation oraz Compaq Computer (partner OEM firmy Quantum) rozpoczęły dostawy napędów i taśm Super DLTtape.
Nowy system Super DLTtape umożliwia odczytywanie taśm DLTtape IV zapisanych w napędach DLT 4000, DLT 7000 oraz DLT 8000. Dzięki temu użytkownicy mogą wymienić pamięci taśmowe na nowe, lepsze modele bez konieczności kopiowania danych archiwizowanych w dotychczasowych systemach DLT.
Podstawą techniki Super DLTtape jest system zapisu magnetycznego ze sterowaniem laserowym (Laser Guided Magnetic Recording — LGMR). Zastosowano też system optycznego serwomechanizmu prowadzącego (Pivoting Optical Servo — POS), w którym do prowadzenia głowic magnetycznych używane są ścieżki optyczne na odwrotnej stronie taśmy.
