System jest rozbudowaną wersją Windows 2000 Advanced Server o możliwośc pracy na serwerach, które mają do 32 procesorów i 64 GB pamięci operacyjnej. System ma wbudowany mechanizm do sterowania procesami – Process Control, który pozwala na dynamiczne przydzielanie liczby procesorów dla konkretnych procesów lub aplikacji. W systemie jest także wbudowane rozwiązanie Winsock Direct, przyspieszające komunikację w sieci System Area Network (SAN). Ponadto system pozwala budować czterowęzłowe klastry pracujące w trybie fail-over.
Równolegle z polską premierą startuje Windows Datacenter Program, który jest kompletnym pakietem obejmującym sprzęt, oprogramowanie i usługi wspomagające, przeznaczone dla e-biznesu. W programie uczestniczą certyfikowani przez Microsoft producenci serwerów – Amdahl, Bull, Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, Hitachi, IBM, ICL, Stratus Computer Systems i Unisys. W Polsce Datacenter Server wspierają: Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, IBM i Unisys.
