Radykalna zmiana w nazewnictwie domen internetowych
Decyzją organizacji ICANN domeny najwyższego poziomu, takie jak .com czy .org, będą mogły mieć dowolną nazwę w dowolnym języku. Wnioski o rejestrację nowych adresów można składać od stycznia 2012 r.
Dotychczas liczba domen najwyższego poziomu (gTLDs) była ograniczona do 22. ICANN, organizacja zarządzająca rejestracją domen, niemal jednogłośnie zdecydowała się znieść wszelkie ograniczenia, otwierając nową erę w historii Internetu.
– Nazwy domen pozostawiamy ludzkiej wyobraźni – powiedział prezes ICANN Rod Beckstrom – Będą mogły nosić dowolne miano w dowolnym alfabecie. Mamy nadzieję, że dzięki temu system domen będzie lepiej służył ludziom.
Zmiana daje firmom nowe możliwości marketingowe. Pozwala np. na tworzenie adresów nawiązujących do nazwy marki, korporacji czy produktu. W internetowej rewolucji chodzi również o niemałe pieniądze – rejestracja domeny ma kosztować 185 tys. dol. Wnioski o przyznanie adresów najwyższego poziomu według zmienionych zasad będzie można składać od 12 stycznia do 12 kwietnia 2012 r.
