Lucent wraz z Certicomem rozpoczął prace nad stworzeniem standardów rozwiązań bezprzewodowego Internetu. Działalność firm skupi się na protokołach uwierzytelnienia i ochrony informacji. Lucent wniesie wkład w postaci technologii, zaś Certicom – standardy ochrony informacji, oparte na infrastrukturze klucza publicznego (Internet PKI – Public Key Infrastructure). Standardy będą obejmować urządzenia bezprzewodowe – karty mikroprocesorowe (smart cards), telefony komórkowe i palmtopy.
Umowa pozwoli Lucentowi na oferowanie technik i oprogramowania do ochrony informacji, opracowanych przez Certicom, takich jak: WTLS Plus dla implementacji WAP, biblioteka narzędzi kryptograficznych Security Builder, produkty PKI Trustpoint i usługa certyfikacji MobileTrust. Wejdą one w skład opracowanej przez Laboratoria Bella platformy aplikacyjnej MiLife Mobile ISP.
