Generuje on czarno-białe wydruki i kopie oraz kolorowe skany. Drukuje i kopiuje z prędkością 22 stron na minutę w rozdzielczości 2400 x 600 dpi. Kombajn standardowo wyposażono w podajnik papieru mieszczący 250 arkuszy oraz odbiornik na 100 arkuszy. Użytkownik ma także do dyspozycji podajnik ADF o pojemności 35 stron.
Maksymalne miesięczne obciążenie modelu DCP-7040 wynosi 10 000 stron. Można drukować kilka stron na jednym arkuszu lub korzystać z funkcji ręcznego dupleksu. Jak wszystkie urządzenia laserowe Brother, DCP-7040 posiada oddzielny toner i bęben. Standardowy toner pozwala wydrukować 1500 stron. Istnieje możliwość zakupu wysokowydajnych tonerów (H-Y) umożliwiających wydruk 2600 stron.
