Mniejszy brat iPada ma 7,9-calowy wyświetlacz IPS i jest dwa razy lżejszy od standardowego urządzenia. Najtańszą wersję wyceniono na 329 dolarów.
Mały iPad będzie oferowany w wersji z Wi-Fi oraz z Wi-Fi i modemem 3/4 G. Dostępne pojemności to 16, 32 i 64 GB. Cenę modelu z pamięcią 16 GB i modułem sieci bezprzewodowej producent ustalił na 329 dol., wersja 16-gigabajtowa z WLAN i modemem to koszt 459 dol. Dla porównania rekomendowana przez Apple’a wyjściowa cena nowego iPada (16 GB) to 499 dol.
W tablecie zastosowano dwurdzeniowy procesor A5 (ten sam co w iPadzie2). Rozdzielczość ekranu wynosi 1024 x 768 pikseli. Kamera iSight (5 Mpix), czyli taka jak w nowym iPadzie, może nagrywać filmy Full HD. Mały iPad ma GPS, umożliwia także korzystanie z rosyjskiego systemu nawigacyjnego Glonass. Model z Wi-Fi waży 308 gramów, a z modułem 3/4 G – kilka gramów więcej (pełnowymiarowe urządzenie – 652 – 662 g).
Apple rozpoczyna przedsprzedaż iPada mini. Na rynek amerykański nowy tablet wejdzie na początku listopada. Nie wiadomo, kiedy zadebiutuje w Polsce.
